Grab your sneakers ................ and go!

Walk, it’s healthy living. No dress code, no special equipment, simply a pair of comfortable tennis shoes and begin walking.

A few years ago, I decided I needed some sort of physical activity in my life; so I began to walk around in my neighborhood. I walked slow and breathed heavy. Oftentimes, I stopped and rested a minute to regain my strength and then continued walking.

Each morning, I put on my sneakers and out the door I go. I began to truly appreciate the fresh air and all the beauty and nature around me.

Walking is easy on the heart. Walk to meditate or listen to audio books, walk while listening to music, or walk with a friend and enjoy good conversation.

It’s not just about walking but buying a new life. Now I walk 2 miles a day, four times a week. Me, personally, I enjoy walking alone to mediate and to appreciate the nature and beauty around me.

It’s so important to take care of yourself because then, you are able to take care of others. That truly is a gift!

My Journey with Heidi Stewart Fitness

Many of us want to start a new week with new beginnings and new goals. This was me with dieting and exercising. But I struggled to keep these goals and would give up. It wasn’t until August of 2014 that I met Heidi Stewart Fitness through my sister-in-law and she changed my life forever. This is when my journey started.

I learned quickly through Heidi that I had to think of it as a lifestyle change and not a diet. This has really helped me through my journey and my success. When I started my sister-in-law took me for my first run and I couldn’t even run a mile without saying “okay, let’s stop” but she encouraged me to keep going and supported me. Next thing you know I could run more and more miles without stopping and 26.2 miles later on the trails and countless metals for 5k’s and Half Marathons. I’m feeling the best I’ve ever felt physically and mentally. But this was the first step. The next thing I took on was setting up a food journal and started logging all the food that I was eating. This really helps track what I am putting into my body and helps me have better eating habits. But of course every now and then I have a “cheat day” to reward myself for all my hard work that I do. I think this is important because I feel I have something to look forward to. Overall I have lost 30lbs over this past year through dedication and support from all the people at Heidi Stewart Fitness.

This is just the beginning and the journey will never end because I feel I can always improve myself physically and mentally.

Aromatherapy – Essential Oils

Do you enjoy lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus scents?

Aromatherapy has been used medicinally for centuries.  At La Mer we are striving to help our clients with non-traditional but evidence based treatments for insomnia, anxiety and general wellbeing.  So I started experimenting on myself with Essential Oils this year.   I started here:  Clinical Aromatherapy: Essential Oils in Healthcare, 3e by Jane Buckle PhD RN.  Essential Oils are small molecules that can pass through the blood brain barrier so the effect is immediate and you only need a small amount.

Did you know the bottom of our feet are very porous and absorb the oils rapidly?

For insomnia apply 4 drops of lavender and cedar-wood essential oils to the bottom of your feet at bedtime and follow with carrier oil (jojoba, grape-seed, or coconut oil) and “voila”, sleep and really soft feet.

If you are feeling a little stressed, place a few drops of lavender and ylang-ylang essential oils on the palm of your hands, rub together and inhale deeply as often as needed. Close your eyes and enjoy the experience.

Remember to test for skin allergies first by applying a small amount of the essential oil on the forearm. If you experience breathing problems or rash discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention if needed.

These are just a few examples of how to use essential oils.   Enjoy.
