In the past few years I have been trying to make better decisions about my lifestyle and nutrition. In this, I found out that I have some food allergies! I am allergic to a plethora of nuts, seeds and their oils.
This has made it particularly hard in finding healthy snacks to eat. A lot of dried fruits have added sunflower seed oils that trigger itching and swelling for me.
I decided that to fully know what is going into my body from the food I am eating I need to use fresh fruits and vegetables and always thoroughly read ingredient lists.
This led to the purchase of a dehydrator, that way I can purchase the organic fruit I like and make my snacks myself. I purchased a Nesco Dehydrator. (See La Mer's STORE for associate link to look at this model.) It had some good reviews on Amazon and wasn’t too expensive.
I make dried apples, strawberries, nectarines and more! My favorite snack I make in my dehydrator is Kiwi! Who knew it would be so delicious? I think it tastes like sour gummy candy. (Some say it’s too sour.)
Kiwifruit is an excellent source of vitamin C and vitamin K as well as a very good source of copper and dietary fiber. It is also a good source of vitamin E, potassium, folate, and manganese.
Every weekend, I take time to make my snacks for the week and it has really helped keep me in line with my food goals and decision making during my hectic work week.
