Seasons in the Sun

I am sure everyone is aware of the dangers of exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.  I trust the EWG’s (Environmental Working Group) reviews on the chemicals that are in make-up and skin products that we use daily. They have put out their 2017 report on the best sunscreens.

Their analysis was quite eye-opening. They reviewed over 750 Beach and Sport Sunscreens,

Almost three-fourths of the products we examined offer inferior sun protection or contain worrisome ingredients like oxybenzone, a hormone disruptor, or retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A that may harm skin. And despite scant evidence, the government still allows most sunscreens to claim they help prevent skin cancer.”

The EWG website also has a list of Best and Worst Scoring Kid’s Sunscreens and also the Best Moisturizers with SPF.

I think the most enlightening part of their findings was that they tell you not to depend on sunscreen alone. Shade and clothing offer much better skin protection. Sunscreen should be your last resort. Top things to remember:

  • Cover up!

  • Plan around the sun, best times of the day are early morning and late afternoon

  • Don’t get burned

  • Wear sunglasses

  • Find shade, under trees or awnings

  • Bring shade, umbrellas, tents
