Last week my physician reviewed lab results with me. He said I was deficient in Vitamin D. The good news is that this can be easily resolved with a supplement, good nutrition, and sunshine!
This vitamin seems to be a super star for the body. Vitamin D aids in the regulation of healthy cell activity, helps with the lubrication of bones, teeth, and hair, and helps with our mood and energy levels.
Daily sunshine can increase your vitamin D intake. Light hitting the skin from the sun's rays stimulates the production of this vitamin and hormone. There are particular foods that we can eat too that can increase our Vitamin D. Shitake mushrooms, egg yolks, orange juice, tuna and fresh, wild caught salmon are wonderful Vitamin D sources.
Guidelines from the Institute of Medicine increased the recommended dietary allowance to 600 international units (IU) daily for ages 1-70 years. As always, contact your doctor about taking a Vitamin D supplement, particularly if you have risk factors for Vitamin D deficiency.
So, I have added new foods to my daily diet, more sunshine, and of course, a Vitamin D supplement. My labs will be rechecked in 4 months. All, I believe will benefit the mind, body and spirit!
